The last stretch includes a ride over Khau Pha Pass—one of Vietnam’s highest and most scenic mountain passes.
In the afternoon, you arrive in Mu Cang Chai, a region well-known for its magnificent rice terraces, particularly around La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha, and De Xu Phinh. These terraced fields, often dubbed the most beautiful in Vietnam, are cultivated by the H’mong people and are most vibrant during harvest season.

Upon arrival, visit the A1 Hill battlefield, the Dien Bien Phu Museum, and the restored underground bunker of French Commander De Castries. The city also offers insight into the culture of the Thai ethnic group, the dominant community in the surrounding area.

Day 3: Dien Bien Phu – Muong Lay (~100 km)
Depart from Dien Bien and enjoy a shorter, more relaxed day of riding through the beautiful, rugged mountains. Today’s route takes you alongside the Nam Na and Da Rivers, through sparsely populated areas rich in natural beauty. The journey provides several opportunities to stop at ethnic villages of the Lao and White Thai people, known for their stilt houses and weaving traditions.

Day 4: Muong Lay – Sa Pa (~160 km)
This leg of the journey features some of the most thrilling mountain riding in Northern Vietnam. Start your ascent toward Lai Chau, passing hydroelectric dams and remote valleys. Continue riding over the spectacular O Quy Ho Pass, which climbs to 2,035 meters and offers sweeping views of Mount Fansipan—the highest peak in Indochina.
In the afternoon, arrive in the famous town of Sa Pa, known for its cool climate, French colonial architecture, and colorful markets. Optional visits include Cat Cat or Ta Van villages, where you can meet the Black H’mong and Red Dao people.

Leave Sa Pa and ride north through smaller mountain roads toward Y Ty, a remote commune on the Chinese border with dramatic rice terraces and frequent cloud cover. The landscape is wild and pristine, with frequent sightings of local hill tribes.

Day 6: Xin Man – Ha Giang (~150 km)
Head deeper into Ha Giang province today, riding through the stunning terraced landscapes of Hoang Su Phi, one of Vietnam’s lesser-known gems. These UNESCO-recognized rice terraces appear to cascade down the hillsides, especially photogenic in the early morning light.
Continue on through winding mountain roads, visiting small markets and tribal communities before reaching Ha Giang city in the afternoon. This is the gateway to the legendary Ha Giang Loop.
