10 Day Ha Noi Northeast Easy Ride Trip – VIETNAMRIDER
Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Ha Noi to Nghia Lo – 200 km
Your motorbike adventure begins in the dynamic capital of Ha Noi. After picking up your motorcycle and ensuring you’re comfortable with it, you’ll begin your journey westward. Leaving the hustle and bustle of the city behind, the route transitions into peaceful countryside, filled with rice paddies, local markets, and traditional villages. The road to Nghia Lo offers an excellent introduction to the diversity of Vietnam’s northern landscapes.
As you leave the urban sprawl, the roads begin to wind through lush, rolling hills and tranquil farmland. The traffic eases the further west you go, and soon you’ll find yourself surrounded by expansive green fields and small villages tucked into the valleys. This ride is not only scenic but also a perfect way to ease into the rhythm of multi-day motorcycle touring in Vietnam.
Upon arrival in Nghia Lo, you’ll check into a local homestay. This small town is located in the Muong Lo Valley and is home to the Thai ethnic minority. Their stilt houses, warm hospitality, and authentic home-cooked meals provide a memorable cultural experience. You’ll sleep in traditional bamboo houses, share meals with your host family, and if you’re lucky, be treated to traditional music or a local dance performance.
Points of interest:
- Nghia Lo Market
- Muong Lo rice fields (especially photogenic during harvest season)
- Local hot springs (available at some homestays)
Day 2: Nghia Lo to Sa Pa – 230 km
Get ready for a day of stunning mountain scenery as you head north toward Sa Pa. This stretch of road is one of the highlights of the trip, winding through terraced rice fields, high mountain passes, and remote ethnic villages. As you ascend in altitude, the air becomes cooler and the views become increasingly dramatic.
The ride includes climbs, twists, and turns that offer breathtaking panoramas. Though road conditions may vary, the excitement of the mountainous terrain is well worth the effort. You’ll pass through beautiful stretches such as Tu Le and possibly the O Quy Ho Pass, one of Vietnam’s highest and most scenic mountain roads.
In Sa Pa, opt for a local homestay just outside the town in villages like Ta Van or Lao Chai. These ethnic H’mong and Dao villages offer peaceful surroundings, authentic culture, and panoramic views of rice terraces carved into the mountainsides.
Points of interest:
- O Quy Ho Pass (Heaven’s Gate)
- Sa Pa town center and market
- Cat Cat, Ta Van, Lao Chai villages
- Stone Church and colonial architecture
Day 3: Rest Day in Sa Pa
Enjoy a slower day in the mountains. Start with a traditional breakfast at your homestay before embarking on a guided morning trek (about 2.5–3 hours) through the surrounding rice terraces, bamboo forests, and minority villages. You’ll meet H’mong, Dao, or Tay families and gain insight into their daily lives, farming practices, and rich cultural traditions.
After returning to your homestay for lunch, the afternoon is yours to relax or explore. You could join a cooking class, enjoy a herbal foot soak, browse local handicrafts, or simply sip tea while taking in the mountain views.
Optional activities:
- Cooking traditional dishes
- Herbal bath or foot soak
- Visiting local shops and workshops
- Scenic hikes around Muong Hoa Valley
Day 4: Sa Pa to Bac Ha – 180 km
After a relaxing day, you’ll hit the road again, heading northeast to Bac Ha. Known for its colorful Sunday market, Bac Ha is a cultural hub for ethnic minorities in the region. The ride is a mix of winding roads through lush valleys and quieter countryside tracks.
Arriving in Bac Ha, check into a homestay run by local Flower H’mong families. These friendly hosts offer a look into their customs, colorful traditional clothing, and delicious regional cuisine.
If your timing coincides with the weekend, you’ll witness Bac Ha Market, one of the most vibrant ethnic minority markets in Northern Vietnam. Even outside market days, the town and its surrounding villages offer great cultural experiences.
Points of interest:
- Bac Ha Market (Sunday)
- Hoang A Tuong Palace
- Ban Pho Village (famous for corn wine)
Day 5: Bac Ha to Ha Giang – 200 km
Today’s route takes you deeper into the remote north. Ha Giang marks the entrance to one of Vietnam’s most spectacular motorbike loops—the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark. The journey is long but rewarding, with views of dramatic karst mountains and local life along the way.
In Ha Giang, you can choose to stay in the city or in nearby ethnic minority villages. Homestays here are often hosted by Tay or Nung families and provide hearty meals, welcoming hospitality, and a restful setting for the night.
Points of interest:
- Quan Ba Heaven’s Gate
- Twin Fairy Bosom Hills
- Ha Giang local market
Day 6: Ha Giang to Dong Van – 190 km
Today you’ll ride through the heart of the Dong Van Karst Plateau—a UNESCO Global Geopark and home to Vietnam’s most rugged landscapes. The highlight of the day is Ma Pi Leng Pass, where the road clings to the cliffs high above the Nho Que River.
Take your time with photo stops and soak in the panoramic beauty. You’ll pass small ethnic villages, limestone peaks, and jaw-dropping valleys. Some sections can be challenging with steep grades and tight switchbacks, but they are manageable with care.
Arriving in Dong Van, stay in a local homestay or guesthouse. The old quarter of Dong Van is charming, and the surrounding nature is some of the most extraordinary in Southeast Asia.
Points of interest:
- Ma Pi Leng Pass
- Dong Van Old Quarter
- H’mong King’s Palace
- Lung Cu Flag Tower
Day 7: Dong Van to Bao Lac – 110 km
Though a shorter ride, the route from Dong Van to Bao Lac continues to impress with its natural beauty. This road takes you through lesser-known mountain paths, past traditional villages and into quieter regions of Cao Bang province.
Bao Lac offers a more relaxed atmosphere and a chance to experience everyday life in a small northern town. Homestays here are usually simple but rich in cultural interaction, hosted by ethnic minorities like the Lo Lo, San Chi, or Tay.
Points of interest:
- Local markets in Bao Lac
- Meo Vac detour (optional)
- Gam River valley views
Day 8: Bao Lac to Ban Gioc – 230 km
A longer but rewarding ride awaits as you head to Ban Gioc Waterfall, located on the border with China. As you descend from the highlands, the landscape changes again—rice paddies, sugarcane fields, and limestone hills.
Your homestay will likely be near the Quay Son River, offering views of the falls and a peaceful village setting. Enjoy a local meal and rest well after a long day.
Points of interest:
- Ban Gioc Waterfall (bamboo rafting optional)
- Nguom Ngao Cave
- Truc Lam Pagoda
Day 9: Ban Gioc to Ba Be Lake – 230 km
Today’s journey takes you southwest to Ba Be National Park, home to Vietnam’s largest natural freshwater lake. The road is a mix of mountainous sections and flatter farmlands. Expect a full day of riding with beautiful scenery throughout.
Upon arrival, check into a lakeside homestay in a Tay ethnic minority village. These stilt houses offer fantastic lake views and access to boat tours.
Points of interest:
- Ba Be Lake (boat trip)
- Puong Cave (Nang River cave)
- Hua Ma Cave
- Pac Ngoi Village
Day 10: Ba Be to Ha Noi – 240 km
The final stretch brings you back to where your journey began. It’s a long ride, so start early and pace yourself. The scenery shifts again from forests and mountains back to the fertile plains and suburban areas outside Ha Noi.
After returning your motorbike, take time to reflect on the incredible landscapes, cultures, and people you’ve encountered during your 10-day Northern Vietnam motorbike tour.
