2 Day Can Tho Easy Ride – VIETNAMRIDER
Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Can Tho – Vinh Long
Distance: Approximately 150 km
Start: 7:30 AM
Overnight: Vinh Long area
We start the morning in Can Tho at around 7:30 AM with a short briefing before heading to the river for a boat trip to Cai Rang Floating Market.
Arriving early, you will see the market while local trading is already underway. Boats loaded with fresh fruit, vegetables and other produce gather along the river, with traders moving between vessels and smaller boats selling breakfast and drinks.
Cai Rang is one of the Mekong Delta’s best-known floating markets, but it remains an important part of local trade. The river is still used to transport agricultural produce from the surrounding countryside into the regional markets.
After visiting the market, we leave the busy waterways around Can Tho and head into the countryside.
The traffic soon becomes lighter as we follow smaller roads through rice fields, fruit orchards, coconut groves and villages. Canals run alongside many of the roads, while houses, small shops and family businesses sit close to the water.
This is where the journey begins to feel different from travelling through the cities. The road takes us through everyday rural life, with farmers working in the fields, boats moving along the canals and local produce being transported between villages.
We make stops along the way for photographs and a relaxed coffee break before continuing towards Vinh Long.
By around midday, we arrive in the Vinh Long area for lunch.
After lunch, we continue our exploration by boat, travelling into the smaller waterways around Vinh Long.
Away from the main river, the surroundings become quieter. The waterways pass gardens, coconut palms, traditional houses and small family workshops. Local boats move slowly along the canals, carrying people and agricultural products between the villages.
The boat trip offers another perspective of the Mekong Delta. From the road, you see the countryside and villages; from the water, you travel through the network of canals that connects them.
After the boat trip, we continue to Vinh Long and spend some time exploring the town and surrounding area before heading to our accommodation in a nearby village.
Tonight, we stay at a local Mekong Delta homestay rather than a conventional city hotel.
The homestay gives you the opportunity to experience the countryside after the day’s sightseeing has finished. Enjoy a home-cooked dinner with your host family and take some time to relax in the quieter surroundings.
Overnight in the Vinh Long area.
Day 2: Vinh Long – Tra On – Soc Trang – Can Tho
Distance: Approximately 150 km
Start: Around 8:00 AM
Finish: Can Tho around 4:00 PM
After breakfast at the homestay, we leave Vinh Long at around 8:00 AM and continue towards Tra On Floating Market.
Smaller and quieter than Cai Rang, Tra On offers a different view of floating-market life in the Mekong Delta. Local boats gather with fresh agricultural produce, with trading taking place directly on the river.
After visiting the market, we continue towards Soc Trang, following rural roads through the Delta.
The route takes us past rice fields, canals, coconut trees and small villages. We keep the pace relaxed and make stops along the way when there is something interesting to see or photograph.
This part of the journey is about travelling through the countryside rather than simply getting from one attraction to the next. You will see farmers working their fields, locals travelling between villages and small boats moving along the canals.
As we approach Soc Trang, the cultural character of the journey begins to change.
Soc Trang is home to a large Khmer community and is well known for its Khmer Buddhist temples. We visit two of the area’s most interesting sites.
Our first stop is Chua Doi, or Bat Pagoda.
The pagoda is famous for the fruit bats living in the trees around the temple grounds. It is also an important Khmer Buddhist site and provides an opportunity to learn more about the cultural and religious traditions of the Khmer communities in southern Vietnam.
We then continue to Chua Dat Set, or Clay Pagoda.
The temple is particularly unusual for its handmade clay statues, religious figures and decorative structures. The craftsmanship inside the pagoda reflects a distinctive local tradition and makes it very different from many of the larger Buddhist temples found elsewhere in Vietnam.
After visiting the two temples, we stop for lunch and have the opportunity to try local dishes influenced by the Vietnamese and Khmer communities of Soc Trang.
In the afternoon, we begin the return journey to Can Tho.
Once again, we leave the larger roads where practical and follow quieter countryside routes. Rice fields, canals, coconut groves and village houses provide a final look at rural life in the Mekong Delta.
The journey gradually becomes busier as we approach Can Tho.
We arrive back in Can Tho at approximately 4:00 PM, completing the 2 Day Can Tho Easy Ride.
End of the tour in Can Tho.
