Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Saigon – Long Tan – Nui Dat – La Gi

Distance: Approximately 150 km
Start: 8:00 AM
Overnight: La Gi

We leave Saigon at around 8:00 AM and head southeast into the countryside.

As the traffic gradually thins out, the urban landscape gives way to quieter roads, farms and small towns. Our first section takes us towards Dat Do, where we stop for a coffee before continuing to the historic sites around Long Tan and Nui Dat.

For travellers interested in Australian military history, this is an important part of the journey.

We visit the Long Tan Cross, the memorial marking the site associated with the Battle of Long Tan on 18 August 1966. Your guide will explain the events surrounding the battle and the role of the Australian forces operating in Phuoc Tuy Province during the Vietnam War.

From Long Tan, we continue towards the former Nui Dat Base, once the headquarters of the 1st Australian Task Force.

Very little remains of the original military base today, as the area has changed significantly since the war. However, the location itself provides an important connection to the history of the Australian Task Force and the wider Phuoc Tuy battlefield.

Rather than simply stopping for photographs, we use the journey between the sites to explain the geography of the former base area, the surrounding villages and the Australian military presence in the province.

After the historical visits, we continue to Ba Ria for lunch.

Around midday, we stop at a local restaurant for Vietnamese food before leaving the historical landscape behind and continuing towards the coast.

The afternoon brings a very different side of southern Vietnam.

We follow quieter roads towards La Gi, passing through rural areas where agriculture and fishing remain an important part of local life. Along the route, you will see beaches, small fishing communities and extensive dragon fruit farms, particularly as we travel through the coastal countryside of Binh Thuan Province.

The landscape becomes increasingly open as we approach the sea.

There are opportunities to stop along the coast for photographs and a drink. Around 3:00 PM, we take a relaxed break near the beach, where you can enjoy a fresh coconut and watch local life along the shoreline.

Continuing towards La Gi, we pass more fishing villages and coastal settlements.

This part of the route is deliberately different from the main tourist road. Instead of rushing towards Mui Ne, we take time to experience the countryside and see how people live and work along this stretch of Vietnam’s coast.

We arrive in La Gi at around 4:30 PM and check into our beachside hotel.

La Gi is a quieter coastal town compared with the better-known resorts further north. After checking in, there is time to relax by the beach, take a swim or walk through a nearby fishing village.

The fishing communities around La Gi offer a simple look at the working coast, with boats coming in and out and local fishermen handling their daily catch.

In the evening, we enjoy fresh seafood for dinner before settling in for the night.

After a day that combines Australian military history with rural and coastal landscapes, La Gi provides a relaxed place to stop before continuing towards Mui Ne.

Overnight in La Gi.

Day 2: La Gi – Phan Thiet – Mui Ne

Distance: Approximately 150 km
Start: 8:00 AM
Finish: Mui Ne around 3:30 PM

We start the second morning with breakfast by the beach before leaving La Gi at around 8:00 AM.

The route continues north along quieter coastal roads towards Mui Ne.

Our first stop is Tan Hai Fishing Village, where we take some time to see the local fishing community and watch the morning activity around the boats.

This is an everyday working environment rather than a purpose-built tourist attraction. Fishermen bring in their catch, local traders prepare seafood and boats are moved between the beach and the water.

We stop for a fresh coconut before continuing north.

The road then takes us towards Phan Thiet, with the coast and countryside appearing regularly along the route.

For those interested in the history of the region, we make a stop at the former Phan Thiet Airbase.

The airbase is another reminder of the military history of southern Vietnam. Today, much of the surrounding area has changed, but the location provides another opportunity to understand the strategic importance of this part of the coast during the war.

From the airbase, we continue into Phan Thiet.

Around midday, we stop for lunch and sample local seafood. Phan Thiet is well known for its fishing industry, so fresh seafood is a natural choice along this route.

After lunch, we leave the town and continue through the countryside towards Mui Ne.

This final section is characterised by dragon fruit farms, salt fields and coastal agriculture. The bright green fields and distinctive cultivation methods provide a strong contrast with the beaches and fishing villages earlier in the journey.

We take our time on the road, with opportunities to stop for photographs and enjoy the changing scenery.

Before reaching Mui Ne, we make one of the final major stops of the tour at the Red Sand Dunes.

The dunes are one of the best-known landscapes around Mui Ne. The red and orange sand contrasts sharply with the surrounding countryside and provides a good viewpoint over the coastal area.

After exploring the dunes, we continue towards Mui Ne.

We arrive at approximately 3:30 PM, bringing the 2 Day Saigon Mui Ne Easy Ride to an end.

Over two days, the journey has covered considerably more than the distance between two tourist destinations. From Saigon, we have travelled through the former Australian military area around Long Tan and Nui Dat, crossed rural countryside, followed the coast through fishing communities and farms, and finished among the beaches and sand dunes of Mui Ne.

End of the tour in Mui Ne.
