3 Day Hoi An Hue Easy Ride – Vietnam Motorbike Tour
Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Hoi An – Prao | Into the Central Highlands
We leave Hoi An in the morning and quickly leave the crowds behind.
The first part of the ride takes us through the countryside west of the city, where rice fields, vegetable gardens and small villages replace the familiar tourist streets of Hoi An. It is an easy introduction to the changing landscapes of central Vietnam.
As we continue toward the mountains, the scenery becomes more rugged. The road begins to climb through forested hills, and the temperature becomes noticeably cooler. Winding roads lead us deeper into the Truong Son mountain range, with views opening across green valleys and distant peaks.
This is where the character of the journey really changes.
Instead of following the main tourist corridor between Hoi An and Hue, we take quieter mountain roads into areas where relatively few international travellers venture. Small settlements appear along the route, often surrounded by forest and farmland.
The region is home to the Co Tu people, one of the indigenous communities of central Vietnam. Traditional houses, village architecture and local customs provide an opportunity to see a side of Vietnamese culture that is rarely encountered on conventional sightseeing tours.
We make stops along the way to meet local people, take photographs and learn from our guide about life in these mountain communities. Depending on the route and local conditions, there may also be opportunities to visit small villages and see traditional homes.
The roads continue to wind through increasingly remote terrain before we eventually reach Prao, a small highland town in Quang Nam Province.
Prao is a quiet place surrounded by mountains and forest. After a full day on the motorcycle, we check into a local guesthouse or hotel and have time to relax.
Dinner is a chance to enjoy local food and talk about the day’s ride before getting some rest for the longer mountain journey ahead.
Overnight: Prao
Riding time: Approximately 4–6 hours
Day 2: Prao – A Luoi | Ho Chi Minh Trail & Truong Son Mountains
Today takes us into one of the most historically significant and remote areas of the journey.
After breakfast in Prao, we continue west toward the Ho Chi Minh Trail, a vast network of roads and paths that played a critical role during the Vietnam War.
The route we travel today is very different from the modern highways used by most visitors. Mountain roads wind through dense forest, across valleys and along rivers, with long stretches where there is little development.
For anyone interested in Vietnamese history, this section provides an opportunity to understand the geography behind one of the most important logistical networks of the war.
Your guide will explain how the Ho Chi Minh Trail operated, why the Truong Son Mountains were strategically important and how the difficult terrain affected the people who lived and travelled through the region.
Along the way, we pass through mountain landscapes that remain remarkably quiet. Forested slopes rise on either side of the road, while occasional viewpoints reveal deep valleys and distant ridgelines.
The riding itself is one of the highlights. The road curves continuously through the mountains, creating a rewarding experience for motorcycle travellers who enjoy changing scenery and less-travelled routes.
As we move toward A Luoi, the landscape opens into a broad mountain valley.
A Luoi is home to ethnic minority communities including the Ta Oi and Pa Co. Their presence has shaped the cultural identity of the valley for generations.
The area also has a significant wartime history. During the Vietnam War, A Luoi and the surrounding mountains were the scene of major military activity because of their proximity to important sections of the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
Depending on the day’s route and local conditions, we may stop at places associated with this history, including former military locations or other wartime remains.
Rather than simply passing through, the aim is to understand the relationship between the landscape, the local communities and the events that took place here.
We also have opportunities to experience local food and meet people along the route.
By late afternoon, we reach A Luoi and check into our accommodation.
Away from the larger cities, the evening is quiet and relaxed. It is a good opportunity to enjoy the mountain atmosphere after another rewarding day on the road.
Overnight: A Luoi
Riding time: Approximately 4–6 hours
Day 3: A Luoi – Hue | Across the Mountains to the Imperial City
Our final morning begins in A Luoi, surrounded by the mountains and forests of the Truong Son range.
After breakfast, we set off toward Hue.
The first part of the day continues through the mountains, with winding roads descending gradually toward the coastal plains. The scenery changes as we lose elevation, moving from forested highlands to farmland, villages and rice-growing areas.
Along the way, there are plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the landscape. Small roads lead through rural communities where traditional houses, farms and everyday village life provide a glimpse of central Vietnam away from the tourist centres.
The contrast between the remote mountains and the increasingly populated lowlands becomes clear as we approach Hue.
Eventually, the quiet mountain roads give way to wider roads and busier traffic. This gradual change marks the end of our journey through the highlands and our return to the cultural heart of central Vietnam.
We arrive in Hue, the former imperial capital of Vietnam.
Hue was the seat of the Nguyen Dynasty and remains one of the country’s most important historical destinations. The city is known for its Imperial City, royal tombs, ancient pagodas and distinctive cultural traditions.
After arriving in Hue, the tour concludes with hotel drop-off.
If you have additional time, Hue is an excellent place to extend your stay. You can explore the Imperial Citadel, visit the royal tombs along the Perfume River or simply enjoy the city’s relaxed atmosphere and famous local cuisine.
After three days of mountain roads, ethnic villages, history and countryside, the Hoi An to Hue Easy Ride comes to an end in one of Vietnam’s most fascinating historic cities.
Riding time: Approximately 4–6 hours
End: Hue
