Tour Itinerary
Day 1 – Saigon to Ben Tre and the Mekong Delta
Distance: approximately 120–180 km depending on the route
Your adventure begins in Saigon as we leave the city behind and head towards the Mekong Delta.
The landscape changes quickly. Heavy traffic gives way to narrow country roads, rice fields, fruit gardens, canals and small communities built around the river. This is where the ride becomes interesting. Instead of simply travelling between cities, you begin to see the Delta at ground level.
Ben Tre is often called the “Coconut Kingdom”, and you will soon understand why. Coconut palms are everywhere, growing along canals and around family farms. We can stop at a local coconut workshop to see how coconuts are processed and taste some of the products made from them.
A short boat trip takes us deeper into the waterways, where life moves at a much slower pace. Small boats carry produce, farmers work beside the canals and houses sit quietly among the trees.
From Ben Tre, the journey continues towards the southern Delta. Depending on the season and road conditions, we may take smaller roads through villages and agricultural areas rather than staying on the main highways.
We finish the day at a local hotel or homestay, where you can relax and enjoy a simple dinner of regional Vietnamese food.
This first day is less about ticking off attractions and more about getting to know the rhythm of the Mekong Delta.
Overnight: Mekong Delta
Day 2 – Soc Trang, Khmer Culture and Cu Lao Dung
Distance: approximately 120–200 km
After breakfast, we continue south towards Tra Vinh and Soc Trang, two provinces where the influence of Vietnam’s Khmer community is particularly strong.
The roads become quieter as we travel through rice-growing country and villages surrounded by palms and fruit trees. Tra Vinh is a good place to slow down and explore some of the Khmer Buddhist heritage of the Delta.
We can visit Ba Om Pond and one or two of the area’s traditional Khmer pagodas, depending on time. The architecture is noticeably different from the Vietnamese temples you may have seen elsewhere in the country, and your guide will explain some of the local traditions and the history of the Khmer community in southern Vietnam.
Continuing towards Soc Trang, we may visit Clay Pagoda, known locally as Chùa Dơi or Bửu Sơn Tự depending on the site being visited, and other temples in the area.
The afternoon takes us towards Cu Lao Dung, a rural island district surrounded by the Mekong’s waterways. The island is a world away from the busy streets of Saigon. Fishing, farming and fruit growing remain part of everyday life.
The best part of riding here is simply the road itself: small lanes, bridges, riverside houses, fruit gardens and friendly locals going about their day.
Tonight we stay in the Soc Trang area.
Overnight: Soc Trang
Day 3 – Soc Trang to Bac Lieu and Ca Mau
Distance: approximately 200–250 km
Today we ride deeper into the southernmost part of Vietnam.
The route takes us through Bac Lieu, a coastal province with a strong connection to fishing, salt production and traditional southern culture.
Along the way, the scenery becomes flatter and more open. You will see rice paddies, shrimp farms, salt fields and waterways stretching towards the coast. This is working countryside rather than a polished tourist landscape, and that is exactly what makes this part of the Delta worth riding.
If conditions allow, we can make a short stop near the Bac Lieu Bird Sanctuary or another suitable wetland area.
From Bac Lieu we continue towards Ca Mau, Vietnam’s southernmost province.
Ca Mau feels different from the central Mekong Delta. The land becomes increasingly influenced by the sea, with mangroves, tidal waterways, fishing communities and aquaculture farms becoming part of the landscape.
The wider Mui Ca Mau Biosphere Reserve contains mangrove systems, wetlands and coastal ecosystems of international ecological importance.
Arriving in Ca Mau, there is time to explore the city and local market before dinner. Seafood is a major part of the local cuisine, so this is a good place to try fresh prawns, crab, squid or locally prepared fish.
It has been a long riding day, so tonight is about good food, a comfortable room and a proper rest.
Overnight: Ca Mau
Day 4 – Ca Mau, Wetlands and Can Tho
Distance: approximately 170–220 km
We leave Ca Mau after breakfast and begin the journey back towards the heart of the Mekong Delta.
The landscape today is dominated by water and wetlands. Depending on the final route and local conditions, we may explore one of the region’s protected wetland areas, with opportunities to see cajuput forest, canals and birdlife.
The U Minh wetland forests are among the most distinctive ecosystems in southern Vietnam. The area is known for its cajuput forests, waterways and rich wildlife, and boat-based exploration can offer a completely different perspective from travelling by road.
From the wetlands, we continue north towards Can Tho, the largest urban centre in the Mekong Delta.
As we approach Can Tho, the countryside becomes greener and more intensively cultivated. Fruit orchards, rice fields and small canals appear between the villages.
If you enjoy food, this is another excellent evening to explore. Can Tho is famous for southern Vietnamese dishes, fresh fruit and simple street food served in local restaurants.
After several days on the road, Can Tho also gives you the chance to enjoy a more comfortable evening in the city.
Overnight: Can Tho
Day 5 – Cai Rang Floating Market, Tra Su Forest and Chau Doc
Distance: approximately 150 km
The final morning starts early.
We head to Cai Rang Floating Market, one of the best-known symbols of the Mekong Delta. The market is most active in the early morning, when boats carrying fruit, vegetables, coffee and breakfast foods gather on the river.
This is not simply a tourist attraction. It is a glimpse into an older way of trading on the river, where boats remain an important part of daily life.
After breakfast, we leave Can Tho and continue west towards Chau Doc.
The countryside gradually changes again. Rice fields open up around the road, Khmer villages appear and the distant mountains of An Giang begin to rise above the flat Delta.
One of the highlights of the final day is Tra Su Melaleuca Forest, a peaceful wetland area near Chau Doc. A small boat takes us through narrow waterways surrounded by cajuput trees and greenery. The forest is particularly atmospheric when the water is calm and the morning light filters through the trees.
Tra Su is now recognised as one of the Mekong Delta’s important ecotourism destinations, with boat trips and walking areas allowing visitors to experience its wetland environment.
From Tra Su, we continue towards Chau Doc.
Depending on your interests and available time, we can visit Ba Chuc, explore local Khmer cultural sites or stop at Sam Mountain for views across the surrounding countryside. Chau Doc is also known for its floating fish-farming communities along the Hau River, where houses and fish cages are closely connected to life on the water.
By the afternoon, we arrive in Chau Doc and bring the five-day adventure to an end.
For travellers continuing to Cambodia, Chau Doc is also a convenient point from which to continue towards the border.
Tour ends in Chau Doc.
