Tour Itinerary

Day 1 – Da Lat to Lak Lake

Distance: Approximately 150 km
Travel Time: 5–6 hours, including stops
Overnight: Lak Lake

The journey begins at around 8:00 AM in Da Lat. Leaving the city behind, we head into the surrounding highlands where the built-up landscape quickly gives way to pine forests, farmland and mountain valleys.

The first section follows the scenic road towards Ta Nung Pass. The route winds through the hills, with sections of forest and open viewpoints overlooking the valleys below.

Rather than rushing through this area, the journey allows time for photographs and short stops along the way. The cooler climate and changing elevation provide a noticeable contrast to the warmer lowlands of southern Vietnam.

K’Ho Culture and Traditional Crafts

As we continue through the highlands, we visit a K’Ho community and learn more about the traditions of one of the indigenous ethnic groups of the Central Highlands.

The K’Ho have a strong connection with the surrounding mountains and agricultural land. Traditional weaving remains an important part of their cultural heritage, with distinctive patterns and colours used in handmade brocade textiles.

At a local weaving workshop, visitors can see how fabric is produced using traditional techniques and learn about the meaning behind some of the designs.

The journey continues to a small pottery workshop, where local artisans demonstrate traditional methods of shaping and finishing clayware.

These community visits provide an opportunity to meet local people and see traditional skills being maintained outside the larger tourist centres.

Through the Highland Coffee Country

Further along the route, coffee plantations become increasingly common.

The Central Highlands are Vietnam’s main coffee-producing region, and coffee is closely connected to the economy and daily life of many communities here.

We stop at a local coffee farm or café to learn more about the crop and the work involved in growing and processing coffee. Depending on the season, visitors may see coffee trees carrying green or ripe cherries.

A cup of strong Vietnamese coffee provides a welcome break before the journey continues towards Lak Lake.

Arrival at Lak Lake

By late morning or around midday, we gradually descend towards Lak Lake, one of the largest natural freshwater lakes in Vietnam.

The landscape around the lake is quite different from Da Lat. Forested hills rise around open farmland and traditional villages, while the water provides an important part of the local environment.

We stop for lunch featuring regional dishes from the Central Highlands. Depending on the location and availability, the meal may include bamboo-cooked rice, grilled chicken, freshwater fish, vegetables and other local specialities.

After lunch, there is time to explore the area around Jun Village, a traditional M’Nong community on the shores of Lak Lake.

M’Nong Village Life

The M’Nong people have lived around Lak Lake for generations, and their culture is closely associated with the surrounding forests, farmland and waterways.

Traditional longhouses and stilt houses can still be found in the villages around the lake. Walking through Jun Village provides an opportunity to see local homes, gardens and everyday activities at a relaxed pace.

Depending on the arrangements, guests can stay in a traditional longhouse-style homestay or a comfortable hotel near the lake.

There is also time for an optional activity on the water. A traditional dugout canoe trip offers a quiet way to experience the lake and see the surrounding landscape from a different perspective.

Guests who prefer to remain on land can explore the village, take photographs or simply enjoy the peaceful lakeside setting.

Evening at Lak Lake

As the afternoon comes to an end, the pace slows considerably.

The hills surrounding the lake provide a beautiful backdrop as the sunlight changes across the water. After a full day travelling through the highlands, this is a good opportunity to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Dinner is served locally, with regional Central Highlands dishes and fresh ingredients.

Guests staying at a homestay may have the opportunity to experience traditional music or cultural performances, depending on the local programme and availability.

Overnight at Lak Lake.

Day 2 – Lak Lake to Dray Sap and Buon Ma Thuot

Distance: Approximately 100 km
Travel Time: 4–5 hours, including stops

After breakfast beside Lak Lake, we continue towards Buon Ma Thuot at around 8:30 AM.

The morning route passes through rural communities and agricultural land, with forested hills and open farmland surrounding the road.

The landscape gradually changes as we move away from Lak Lake. Coffee, rubber and pepper plantations become more common, reflecting the importance of agriculture to the Central Highlands.

Dray Sap Waterfall

Our first major stop is Dray Sap Waterfall, one of the best-known natural attractions in Dak Lak Province.

The name Dray Sap is commonly associated with the mist created by the falling water. The waterfall drops over a rocky section of the river, creating spray that rises into the surrounding forest.

We take time to explore the area, walk along the nearby paths and enjoy the viewpoints around the waterfall.

The surrounding forest provides a cooler and quieter environment, making Dray Sap a pleasant place to spend part of the morning.

Your guide can also explain the local geography and the importance of rivers and waterfalls to communities throughout the Central Highlands.

Highland Agriculture

After leaving Dray Sap, the journey continues towards Buon Ma Thuot through one of Vietnam’s most productive agricultural regions.

Coffee plantations dominate much of the landscape, but rubber, pepper and fruit crops are also important.

At a local farm, visitors can learn how these crops are grown and harvested.

Coffee production is particularly significant. The region’s warm climate, volcanic soils and elevation provide suitable conditions for growing robusta coffee, which has become an important part of Vietnam’s agricultural economy.

Depending on the season, you may see farmers harvesting coffee cherries or preparing the crop for processing.

Rubber plantations create another distinctive landscape, with long rows of trees extending across the countryside. Local farmers collect latex from the trees before it is processed for use in a wide range of products.

Pepper plantations provide another insight into highland agriculture, with pepper vines growing vertically around supporting poles.

These agricultural stops help explain the landscape seen throughout the journey and show how the Central Highlands support both local communities and Vietnam’s wider agricultural economy.

Local Lunch

Around midday, we stop for lunch at a local restaurant or family-run establishment.

The menu may include grilled meat, freshwater fish, vegetables, rice and other regional dishes.

After lunch, the journey continues through rural Dak Lak towards Buon Ma Thuot.

Small villages, farms and plantations gradually become more frequent as we approach the city. Although Buon Ma Thuot is a busy regional centre, its connection with the surrounding agricultural landscape remains very strong.

Buon Ma Thuot – Vietnam’s Coffee Capital

We arrive in Buon Ma Thuot, widely regarded as the centre of Vietnam’s coffee industry.

Coffee is part of the city’s identity, with local cafés, farms, producers and cultural attractions all reflecting the importance of the crop.

A key stop is the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Museum, which explores the history and culture of coffee in Vietnam and around the world.

The museum provides an introduction to the origins of coffee, its journey to Vietnam and the development of the Central Highlands as a major coffee-producing area.

It also offers a useful connection between what visitors have seen during the journey and the wider story of coffee production in Vietnam.

After visiting the museum, there is time for a final coffee or a short walk around the city, depending on the day’s schedule.

The journey finishes in Buon Ma Thuot at approximately 4:00 PM.
