HA GIANG, VIETNAM – Ha Giang Easy Riders developed later and differently from the older motorcycle-tour scenes in Da Lat and Nha Trang. A small number of local riders were already taking foreign travellers around the province before the COVID-19 pandemic, but the business remained limited. It was after international tourism returned that the Ha Giang Loop became a major attraction, bringing a new generation of local motorcycle drivers into the growing Easy Rider trade…
Before the Ha Giang Boom
When I travelled through Ha Giang on long motorcycle journeys in the years before COVID, I did not see a large local Easy Rider industry.
There were already motorcycle-tour operators bringing foreign travellers into the province, and some local riders were working with them. Tripadvisor reviews show that Easy Rider tours were already being offered in Ha Giang by 2018 and 2019, with travellers mentioning individual local riders by name.
But this was still a relatively small business.
The development was quite different from what happened earlier in Da Lat and Nha Trang. In those places, motorcycle guiding developed over many years as a specialised trade. Riders built their own knowledge of Vietnam, its history, culture and long-distance routes.
In Ha Giang, the model was more closely connected to the growth of the Ha Giang Loop as a tourist route.
Hanoi Operators and Local Riders
Some of the early business came from motorcycle-rental and tour operators based in Hanoi.
At first, renting motorcycles did not necessarily mean providing a rider. Foreign travellers could rent a motorcycle and ride the Ha Giang route themselves. When larger groups travelled together, operators could also arrange local mechanics to accompany them and deal with motorcycle problems along the way.
As demand for guided trips increased, another opportunity appeared.
Foreign travellers wanted to see Ha Giang without necessarily riding themselves. Tour operators needed people who knew the local roads and could carry passengers by motorcycle.
The solution was straightforward: hire local people.
Many of these riders came from the countryside around Ha Giang. They already knew how to ride motorcycles and knew their local roads. They did not necessarily come from a professional tourism background.
This is an important part of understanding the Ha Giang Easy Rider business.
The riders were not necessarily the people who created the tourist product. In many cases, they became the people who delivered it on the road.
What Does “Easy Rider” Mean Here?
There is also some confusion among foreign travellers about the name Easy Rider.
In Vietnam, a person carrying a passenger by motorcycle is traditionally known as a xe ôm. “Easy Rider” became a Western tourism term used to describe a local motorcycle driver taking a foreign traveller as a passenger.
Over time, the English name became much more familiar to international tourists.
This is why I do not see “Easy Rider” as the name of one particular company or something that belongs to one particular group in Ha Giang.
It is a description used in the tourism business.
Wherever local motorcycle drivers take foreign travellers around the country, they may be marketed to Western visitors as Easy Riders.
That distinction is important because many travellers today see “Easy Rider” as if it were a specific Vietnamese brand or an organised national organisation. It is not.
A Different Kind of Motorcycle Guide
From my own experience travelling through Ha Giang many times, the local riders I encountered were very different from the older Easy Rider groups I knew in Da Lat and Nha Trang.
Their strength was local knowledge.
They knew the roads, villages and mountain routes around Ha Giang. They knew how to handle a motorcycle on the steep and winding roads.
But that does not automatically make someone a professional tour guide in the traditional sense.
Long-distance motorcycle guiding requires more than riding a motorcycle. It can involve knowledge of Vietnamese history, regional geography, culture, wartime history, local communities, accommodation, road conditions and how to deal with different kinds of international travellers.
The older Easy Rider communities in Da Lat and Nha Trang developed those skills over many years and operated on much longer routes across Vietnam.
The Ha Giang riders generally worked within a much smaller geographical area.
Their business was built around Ha Giang and the Loop.
After COVID, Everything Changed
The biggest change came after the COVID-19 period.
International tourism stopped during the pandemic. When foreign travellers began returning to Vietnam, Ha Giang became one of the places that attracted enormous attention.
The reason was easy to understand.
The mountains were spectacular. The roads were adventurous. The limestone landscapes, passes, villages and ethnic minority communities gave travellers an experience that was very different from the major cities and coastal resorts.
For many young Western travellers, the Ha Giang Loop became one of the highlights of a trip through Vietnam.
And once the demand increased, the number of local riders increased with it.
The Easy Rider model became much more visible.
Recent traveller reviews show how quickly the business expanded. By 2022 and 2023, Tripadvisor reviews were regularly describing multi-day Ha Giang Loop trips with teams of Easy Riders.
Today, the term is everywhere.
Not the Same Story as Da Lat or Nha Trang
Ha Giang has now become one of Vietnam’s best-known motorcycle destinations.
But its Easy Rider history should not automatically be mixed together with the history of Da Lat and Nha Trang.
They developed under different circumstances.
Da Lat and Nha Trang had older motorcycle-tour communities that developed when Vietnam’s international tourism industry was still young. Riders gradually built their trade, their routes and their reputation among foreign travellers.
Ha Giang followed a different path.
The tourist destination came first. The demand for the Loop grew. Tour operators needed local motorcycle drivers. Local people entered the business. The Western tourism term “Easy Rider” became attached to the service.
Then, after COVID, the whole market expanded rapidly.
That is the story I have observed from many years of travelling through Vietnam by motorcycle.
Ha Giang today is a major motorcycle-tour destination. Its Easy Riders are an important part of that business.
But their history is relatively recent, and it is different from the earlier Easy Rider traditions that developed in Da Lat and Nha Trang.
