Tour Itinerary

Day 1 – Saigon to Long An and Ben Tre

Distance: Approximately 150 km
Riding Time: 5–6 hours, including stops
Overnight: Ben Tre

The journey begins in Ho Chi Minh City at around 7:30 AM. Once we leave the city, the traffic gradually gives way to a much quieter landscape as we enter Long An Province and the northern edge of the Mekong Delta.

The first part of the ride follows local roads through agricultural areas. Rice paddies, lotus ponds, sugarcane fields and small farms replace the buildings and busy streets of Saigon. The roads are relatively narrow in places, allowing us to travel at an easy pace and take in the countryside around us.

Around mid-morning, we stop at a local village café for a Vietnamese coffee. These simple roadside cafés are an important part of everyday life in rural Vietnam. It is a chance to take a break, watch local traffic pass by and get your first taste of the slower rhythm of the Mekong Delta.

We then continue south-west, riding beside canals and through villages surrounded by coconut palms and tropical gardens. Houses are often built close to the waterways, reflecting the importance of rivers and canals to transport, farming and daily life.

As we travel further into the Delta, you will begin to see how closely agriculture is connected with the local communities. Farmers work in the rice fields, boats carry produce along the canals and small roadside stalls sell fruit and other locally grown products.

Around lunchtime, we reach a local family home near the Mekong River. Here, we enjoy a home-cooked meal prepared with fresh regional ingredients. Depending on the season and availability, dishes may include clay-pot fish, fresh vegetables, spring rolls, local soups and tropical fruit.

The meal is also an opportunity to spend time with a local family and learn about life in the Delta. Rather than simply passing through the countryside, you have a chance to see how food is grown, prepared and enjoyed within a traditional household.

In the afternoon, we continue towards Ben Tre, one of the Mekong Delta’s best-known coconut-growing provinces.

A local ferry crossing takes us across one of the region’s waterways. From the ferry, you can see fishing boats, cargo vessels, riverside homes and other forms of local river traffic. These crossings remain a practical part of transportation in many parts of the Delta.

Once back on the road, we continue through Ben Tre’s rural countryside. Coconut groves become increasingly common, with palms growing along canals, gardens and village roads.

We arrive at our riverside homestay at around 4:30 PM. Surrounded by tropical gardens and waterways, the homestay provides a peaceful place to finish the first day.

You can relax, take a short walk around the surrounding village or simply sit by the water and watch local life continue as the afternoon comes to an end.

Dinner is enjoyed locally, giving you another opportunity to experience regional food and the relaxed atmosphere of the Mekong countryside.

Overnight in Ben Tre.

Day 2 – Ben Tre to Tra Vinh and Soc Trang

Distance: Approximately 150 km
Riding Time: 5–6 hours, including stops
Overnight: Soc Trang

After breakfast at the homestay, we leave Ben Tre at around 8:00 AM and continue deeper into the southern Mekong Delta.

Today’s ride takes us through a landscape of coconut plantations, rice fields, canals and small farming communities. The roads are generally quiet, and there is plenty to see along the way.

As we travel towards Tra Vinh, the cultural character of the region begins to change. This part of the Mekong Delta is home to a large Khmer community, and Khmer traditions have played an important role in the history and identity of the area for generations.

Around mid-morning, we stop at a Khmer Buddhist pagoda. The architecture, colours and layout are noticeably different from many Vietnamese Buddhist temples, reflecting the cultural heritage of the Khmer people in southern Vietnam.

Your guide will explain the significance of the temple, the role of Theravada Buddhism and some of the traditions that continue to shape community life.

After the temple visit, we continue through rural villages towards a local Khmer community, where we stop for lunch.

Lunch is prepared by a local family using fresh ingredients from the surrounding area. Regional dishes may include grilled fish, sour soup, vegetables, prawns and other Mekong Delta specialities.

Eating in a family home provides a more personal experience of the region. You can see how a traditional household operates and enjoy a relaxed conversation with the people who live and work in the area.

In the afternoon, we continue towards Soc Trang.

One of the day’s memorable stops is the Nga Nam Floating Market, located where several waterways meet. The market has long been associated with the movement of agricultural produce through the Delta.

The atmosphere changes throughout the day, but there may still be boats carrying fruit, vegetables and other goods along the waterways. Depending on local activity and conditions, there may also be opportunities to buy fresh tropical fruit or observe local traders going about their business.

From the market, we continue towards Soc Trang through a mixture of rice-growing countryside, coconut plantations and small settlements.

Soc Trang is another important centre of Khmer culture in southern Vietnam. Before the day ends, we visit one of the area’s notable religious sites, such as Bat Pagoda or Clay Pagoda, depending on the itinerary and local conditions.

Bat Pagoda is particularly well known for its Khmer architectural style and the large fruit bats that live among the trees surrounding the temple. The site offers an interesting combination of religion, architecture and local wildlife.

Clay Pagoda provides a different experience, with its unusual handcrafted decorations and distinctive religious artwork.

After the visit, we continue to our countryside accommodation.

Dinner is served locally, with the opportunity to enjoy more regional dishes before settling in for the evening.

The second day finishes in a quieter part of Soc Trang, away from the main tourist centres.

Overnight in Soc Trang.

Day 3 – Soc Trang to Can Tho

Distance: Approximately 100 km
Riding Time: 4–5 hours, including stops

After breakfast, we leave the countryside around Soc Trang at approximately 8:00 AM and begin the final section of the journey towards Can Tho.

Although today’s riding distance is shorter, the route includes several interesting cultural stops before reaching the city.

Our first stop is Phu Tan Village, where local families have practised traditional bamboo weaving for generations.

Bamboo is an important natural material throughout Vietnam, particularly in rural communities. In Phu Tan, skilled craftspeople turn bamboo into practical household items such as baskets, sieves, chairs and other products.

Visiting local homes and workshops gives you the opportunity to see the process at close range. You can watch artisans split, shape and weave the bamboo by hand and learn how traditional skills are passed from one generation to the next.

From Phu Tan, we continue towards Phuoc Thuan Hamlet, an area known for its traditional glass painting.

This distinctive craft combines hand-painted designs with religious, cultural and decorative imagery. The tradition has been maintained locally for decades, and meeting the artists provides an insight into a craft that is not usually encountered on standard Mekong Delta itineraries.

You can see how the artists prepare and decorate the glass and learn about the techniques involved in creating the finished pieces.

By around 12:30 PM, we stop for lunch with another local family. After two days of travelling through the Delta, this final meal provides another opportunity to enjoy regional cooking in a relaxed local setting.

After lunch, the ride continues through rice fields, canals and Khmer-influenced villages.

The scenery becomes increasingly open as we move through the countryside. Long stretches of rice paddies are broken by waterways, houses and lines of palm trees. Depending on the season, the fields may be freshly planted, bright green with growing rice or ready for harvest.

There are opportunities for short stops along the way to take photographs, stretch your legs or enjoy a cold drink at a local café.

As we approach Can Tho, the rural landscape gradually gives way to larger settlements and busier roads. Can Tho is the largest city in the Mekong Delta and an important centre for trade, transport and agriculture.

We aim to arrive in Can Tho at approximately 3:30 PM.

The tour finishes with a drop-off at your hotel in Can Tho. From here, you are free to explore the city, walk along the riverside, visit the local markets or simply relax after three days of riding through the Mekong Delta.
