Do we travel through malaria-infested areas?

Malaria is virtually non-existent in most parts of Vietnam. There is no danger in city and resort areas such as Dalat, Hoi An, Hue, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Nha Trang. Malaria is not a major threat in the Central Highlands. This includes places and cities such as Buon Me Thuot, Pleiku, and Kon Tum.

What exactly is malaria?
Malaria is a parasitic infection caused by malaria parasites. Malaria is primarily found in (sub)tropical countries such as Vietnam.

How does one contract malaria?
Mosquitoes are the vectors of malaria parasites. A mosquito bite allows the parasites to enter the body. The parasites multiply first in the liver, then in red blood cells. Malaria is not contagious: it is not transmitted from person to person.

How can I reduce my chances of contracting malaria in Vietnam?
Malaria mosquitos sting primarily in the evening, at night, and early in the morning. Wearing clothes with long sleeves and trousers legs, as in other countries, reduces the risk of malaria in Vietnam. Mosquito repellents and the use of a mosquito net are also advised. Examine all possible safeguards.

Unfortunately, there is no malaria vaccine.
